Personal Appearances
It has been a real honor to be of service to the good people of America for the past 50 years. Without question, I have helped thousands of our fellow citizens, but of course you would always like to have helped more. If you have never heard me speak, or read any of my writings, you may ask, how have you helped other people? Well, first and foremost, I am an encourager, something we all need every day, and in many, many other ways. Over this period of time I have received thousands of letters from my radio listeners, newspaper readers and those who have heard me speak or read my books, and I am truly grateful for each one.
One of these letters pretty well sums up my career. It came from Chris Shoemaker, Director of Public Relations for Bluefield College, in Bluefield, West Virginia, to acknowledge a speech I had made for him back in 2001. He says, “When we booked you as our lecturer, we thought we were getting an intriguing speaker who could discuss the business of being a journalist. What we actually got was a wise Christian man who, while sharing his words of wisdom about the media, touched our hearts, made us laugh, and inspired us to be more than just a better journalist but better people.
“You advised us that doing our jobs ‘and then some’ will make us better employees. You showed us that ‘being the best we can be’ begins with a positive attitude. You helped us realize that the road to success in all facets of life starts by being a servant to others. And you encouraged us to remember the really important things in life that lead to true happiness.” Thanks again, Chris.
While I am in the twilight of my career, history is replete with individuals who did not do their best work until they were well past 80 years of age. It is my heartfelt prayer that the books and other writings that I leave behind will be of far greater value, and help more people, than what I have been able to do in this life. For the remainder of my days I would love to do radio and television interviews, book signings, and having speaking engagements. We would like to limit speaking engagements in-state, where it can be a one-day trip, as my lovely wife Janis loves to travel with me. She also takes care of book sales and other details while I am greeting people.
